Every Time You Leave A Comment, God Spares A Kitten

When I asked for more comments, I didn't expect anything as insanely crazy as this one, about my wee Sarah Palin/Jesus pic:

"Most woman do not get pregnant from being raped because of the shock and if a woman does get pregnant then it is the will of God for the child to come to this earth and love is present during any conception." - Anonymous

Wowser.

Let's leave the horrible facts about rape to one side.

"Love is present during any conception".

WTF?

On second thoughts, let's not leave the facts about rape to one side. Without emergency contraception, there is around a 15% chance of rape resulting in pregnancy amongst adolescents. So, according to our anonymous commentator, it's the will of God for around 15% of teenage rape victims to get pregnant.

Can you feel the infinite love?

I'd feel a lot angrier about this all if it wasn't for a wonderful line I read today at Freethinker.co.uk, from Dr Richard Harries, former Bishop of Oxford:

"...more than two-thirds of fertilised eggs are lost in nature... If each of these is really a person, that is, an eternal soul, it would lead to the absurd conclusion that heaven is mainly populated by people who have never been born."
Yup, there go those pesky facts again, getting in the way of ignorant, bigotted, f__kwits.

But hey. I should and I do thank "anonymous" for stopping by. Remember, kids, every time you leave a comment, God spares a kitten...

Edited to clarify the 15% stat applies to adolescents

Where did you get the 15% pregnancy rate? I'd really like a link so I can shove it in the face of the people who told me last weekend that rape victims don't get pregnant. Misinformation is the enemy!

The 15% rate can be found in PTETs wiki link.Does that count for saving a kitten?

btw-ptet have you been to:

http://ptet.blogpsot.com/ ? You left that address in one of your comments on my blog. Here is a sample from the site: "THERE ARE APP. 10,285 PROPHECIES IN THE BIBLE AND EVERY ONE UP TO THIS TIME HAS COME TRUE WITHOUT ONE SINGLE EXCEPTION? THE FOOL HAS SAID IN HIS HEART THERE IS NO GOD-Ps 14:1."

And hmmmm... the 15% rate is for adolescents.

I'd be interested to see more about the US study showing a 5% rate amongst a wider age range. I guess that considered things like morning-after contraception.

In any case, I'll edit the original post to clarify the 15% rate...

Yeah, I looked there. All the higher pregnancy rates are studies done in poorer countries. I don't think a study done in Mexico or Ethiopeia is going to convince these people. The only US study cited was about 5%.

Sorry, I got interupted in the middle of my previous post and didn't realize you'd changed the comment. Thanks!

I found an abstract of the American study:

"The national rape-related pregnancy rate is 5.0% per rape among victims of reproductive age (aged 12 to 45); among adult women an estimated 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year. Among 34 cases of rape-related pregnancy, the majority occurred among adolescents and resulted from assault by a known, often related perpetrator. Only 11.7% of these victims received immediate medical attention after the assault, and 47.1% received no medical attention related to the rape. A total 32.4% of these victims did not discover they were pregnant until they had already entered the second trimester; 32.2% opted to keep the infant whereas 50% underwent abortion and 5.9% placed the infant for adoption; an additional 11.8% had spontaneous abortion."

The 15% rate is for adolescents. I don't know if that includes miscarriages, but it's reasonable to think emergency contraception wasn't available.

The 5% USA rate includes older women; specifically excludes miscarriages; and I can't see if that includes emergency contraception.

In any event, are your Anti-abortion friends really saying that 1 in 20 rape victims (at the least) should have no choice about carrying their attacker's baby to term?

Creepy.

No, they're actually sorta prochoice. They just watch way too much Fox News.
