Sarah Palin Speaks In Tongues

Wow. Apparently Pentecostals are "offended" by this cartoon, and want it removed from Washingtonpost.com. In their defense, they are right that the Washington Post refused to run the Danish "Mohammad Cartoons". After all, they ran in an Egyptian newspaper (as shown) and nobody rioted there.

I often wonder in these sorts of discussions whether Christians are complaining that they wouldn't riot; or whether they are threatening that they might?

Here's what I think. We should be proud in the West that we don't riot when someone makes a joke involving something about our religious beliefs (or lack thereof).

Am I wrong?

Edited to add: It's worth mentioning the original cartoon ran on 9 September - before Palin started speaking in tongues during CBS News Interviews...

Does Obama Get a Free Ride?

Apparently, Barack "Hussein" "Isn't he a Muslim" Obama is getting an easy ride from the mainstream media. Instapundit trembles:

"A READER AT A MAJOR NEWSROOM EMAILS: "Off the record, every suspicion you have about MSM being in the tank for O is true. We have a team of 4 people going thru dumpsters in Alaska and 4 in arizona. Not a single one looking into Acorn, Ayers or Freddiemae. Editor refuses to publish anything that would jeopardize election for O, and betting you dollars to donuts same is true at NYT, others. People cheer when CNN or NBC run another Palin-mocking but raising any reasonable inquiry into obama is derided or flat out ignored. The fix is in, and its working." I asked permission to reprint without attribution and it was granted."
That doesn't sound good... But is it accurate?

Surely these allegations were investigated ad nauseam in the primary race, by Hillary Clinton's people, Drudge, Fox and whoever else you might like to mention? And is McCain getting bad press now for old allegations, or for new mess-ups?

Media monitors FAIR say its a myth that the media generally is biased towards Obama - but even so I'll bet my pound to your dollar that Fox News have slightly more than four people working full time to "investigate" Obama... If there's real dirt around about Obama (or McCain), it's hard to imagine it staying hidden for long.

One thing lost in all this, surely, is that the media "likes" Obama because he's gone out of his way to be media friendly. He's worked at it for years on the basis, presumably, that "its an important part of the electoral process".

McCain and Palin are getting bad press now because their double act is more Laurel and Hardy than Roosevelt and Truman.

More, it's not as if even the insane and gibbering allegations against Obama haven't been aired in the mainstream media... Take the case of the Republican Mayer who recently forwarded on emails claiming Obama was the antichrist.
"I was just curious if there was any validity to it," he said. "I was trying to get documentation if there was any scripture to back it up."
Does anyone in the USA not know what this refers to?

One comment I featured recently implied that Bill O'Reilly had somehow given Obama an easy ride in his recent interview... But the fact is Obama survived it unscathed - so much so in fact that it's vanished from O'Reilly's front page over at Fox.

Let's be serious: if there is dirt on Obama it could and should be aired. It will be aired. But for now, with the world in financial crisis and a Republican VP Candidate who needs to phone a friend before answering basic policy questions, it's hardly surprising that the focus of the media is on new things.

I'll close with Keith Olberman, today's "Smuggest Person In The World", giving Obama a soft slap and ridiculing - again, as it needs to be ridiculed - the notion that Palin's slapstick performances to date have been down to "too much preparation".

Does Obama get a free ride? What do you think?

Free Sarah Palin

Neocon super-pundit Bill Kristol is comically almost always wrong. He did have one bullseye, though, picking out Sarah Palin as a likely McCain running mate way, way back in June.

Now this looks like less than a stellar choice, he's out spinning again. Apparently Palin's problem is not that she's clueless and incoherent: it's that she's been mollycoddled by the Bush-ites running the McCain Campaign. Kristol thinks Palin should have been out on conservative talk radio, talking to bloggers, speaking directly to the base. Here he is on Fox News, crying "Free Sarah Palin!"

The NRO got the same memo:

"...none of that would matter if Palin just couldn't perform, but some fairly well-informed people in this believe that, even given her lack of experience in some national issues, she is still performing far below her abilities in these big network interviews, and they're trying to figure out why that is. So they think a better strategy might have helped. Perhaps. But the McCain team chose the path it chose, and now they have put an enormous amount of pressure on Palin as Thursday's debate approaches."
So there we have it... Palin's terrible interviews (and "disastrous" debate and press-conference dress rehearsals) are down to too much cramming from ivory-tower egg-heads who think a politician should like, know stuff instead of like, just feeling stuff.

I'd believe that more if it weren't for this very odd joint appearance by McCain and Palin on CBS News yesterday. Palin is more assertive and looks more assured; but that only makes McCain more nervous and more defensive:

So why is Palin being unleashed today? Could it be that everyone's expectations of her are are now so low that she couldn't possibly mess up? That's likely the case.

On that note, I don't see why Team McCain aren't clamoring for CBS to release their withheld footage of Palin not being able to name one Supreme Court decision beyond Roe v. Wade... (Hint: Bush v Gore, 2000). Surely it can't be that embarrassing? And surely the "intelligent and educated"'s constant ridiculing of Palin is now her greatest vote-winning strength?

Free Sarah Palin! Let her do her best, and let the elitists do their worst. For once, Bill Kristol might be right after all.

Jesus Still Loves Sarah Palin

You know things are bad for Sarah Palin when even the foaming right-wingers at the NRO say she should step aside for "family reasons". (Before, they were calling for Palin to debate Obama directly).

There is, however, one group who still think Miss Palin is a shoo-in; for who her lack of knowledge or even interest on foreign policy is irrelevant; for whom her bizarre demon-banishing church past-life seems perfectly normal. That is the irrational right; the evangelical fundy-mental-ists; the idiot wing of the most Christian nation on Earth... And nowhere are these people found in a greater concentration than over at Rapture Ready.

These comments are all from one recent thread (my emphasis):

"Satan has armed his armies with very real hatred against Palin. We simply must hold her up in prayer. Whether or not God intends to allow McCain/Palin to win this election is beside the point. I pray that He will raise up the righteous and bring down the wicked. Who the wicked and righteous are ~ only He knows that." - Gabby

"I've been just in awe how this election is going. There's Obama that is a very shady person, nobody really knows his background (and the media doesn't dig into it!), there so much against him..even to the point of calling him an antichrist (or fake messiah). Then we get Sarah Palin, that loves God, loves life, and had to have been put in the place she's at by God. So we have that Good against Evil scenario going on and it's just wild to watch!" - caroljo

"Might as well just split the country between them. Conservatives on the east half, and liberals on the west half. Each is responsbile for their own govt, lawmakers, military, value system, morals, schooling, etc... That is the best solution I can think of, outside of looking at an all-out war between the liberals and conservatives." - HisAlways

"It is so CLEAR to any believer that Palin is under serious spiritual attack. She, as a bible-believing Christian, is a HUGE threat to satan. I'd say that all the horrific attacks against her are simply a confirmation that she is a powerful ambassador for Christ. Lifting her up in prayer." - SetApart

"Hey, if she is posting here....GO SARAH!!!!!! We need more people like you in government!" - swimclb

Exclusive! Sarah Palin on Russia

Don't you hate it when you have a really good idea for a joke, then it turns out that everyone else had pretty much the same idea? Enjoy in any case. I made this as a present for Drew.

I love America. I've only been once, as a kid. But I loved it. I love American music, movies, food, comedy, television, people, politics and spirit. I even love the crazy fundamentalists. It drives me crazy, it fills me with joy. I love it so.

But golly gosh has Sarah Palin become an embarrassment for the USA.

Here's the original video in case you missed it.

What do you think? Should Palin resign to spend more time with her family? Or is she qualified despite what people think, because she "knows Jesus" in that special way?

Jack Van Impe on Sarah Palin, World War III

Jack Van Impe briefly mentions Sarah Palin in this extract from his latest programme, discussing the Rapture and World War III.

The highlights:

  • Jack Van Impe is from the same spiritual family as the Assemblies of God, Sarah Palin's church until the age of 38
  • The world is not going to "End". Jesus will return to rule over this Earth.
  • The Rapture is imminent. The "faithful" will be eaten by Cthulhutaken by Jesus in the twinkling of an eye. The rest of us will be left behind
  • After the rapture, the European Union will broker peace in the Middle East
  • Russia will end the peace, bringing nuclear war
  • Russia's armies will be decimated
  • An army of two billion Chinese will join the conflict
  • Seven years after the Rapture, Jesus will return to end the War and bring peace in a thousand year reign (so, presumably, we needn't worry about the environment 'cause God will fix it)

Watch in awe as Jack grins over the deaths of hundreds of millions of people and, presumably, the smoking remains of Israel.

Sarah Palin apparently has "deep religious convictions". She's been described as a Young Earth Creationist who is adamant that Jesus will return in her lifetime. So does she, like Jack Van Impe, think that World War III is just around the corner? It would be nice to know, one way or the other.

Sarah Palin: Dinosaur Rider

It must be great being Sarah Palin. When you're not riding dinosaurs or waiting for Jesus, you're almost a heartbeat away from being supreme ruler of the known universe. That, and you get the world's softest interview from Sean Hannity.

Still, she managed to mess that up. Even when fed the simplest leading questions in the safest environment, Ms Palin looked wooden and unprepared. Fortunately, this does not affect her biggest assets: she is white, pro-life and likes guns.

Theologyweb: Dumb for Jebus

Theologyweb is a stellar example of how Evangelical Christianity works tirelessly to keep itself ignorant and uninformed.

In a thread entitled "When Is Abortion Murder", I pointed out that the establishment clause in the US constitution made religious-only arguments against abortion counter productive.

This led to a predictable flurry of god-botherers falling over themselves to out-stupid each other. Amongst their finest gems...

"In fact life does not begin at conception at all. Life only comes from life, so the origin would be at the point the first life form came into being. From my perspective that would be at the creation (in the case of human beings that would be Adam). So even an unfertilized ovum is actually alive. It only becomes a human being at conception." - Jedidiah

"There's a model for God's plan even in our reproductive systems, as reflective by Torah... Sperm struggles like a man to get into the egg, Heaven. When he enters he finds Life, embryo... All the rest of the sperm are flushed away into the Lake of Fire. Unrealized Heaven is also Hell and flushed away, unfertilized eggs with the period. Thus the state of being unclean during these emissions, which remind us to repent of our old selves that keep us from Life." - John Goddard
Those arguments should go down great in the Supreme Court (if Mr Goddard can stop scrubbing himself clean of all that unwanted sperm for two minutes.) Keep up the good work, guys.

Meanwhile, I'd gotten intro trouble for using the tag line "Jebus != Jesus" in my handle. Apparently, Twebers are so insecure in their faith that they're terrified I'll scare Jesus into not coming back. In childish retaliation, I changed my tag to "FYJITC" (take a wild guess) and my avatar pic to South Park's Jesus crapping on the American Flag (which, remarkably, was still up at the time of writing).

Anyway. Back to the thread.

My injection of rationality got me noticed by one of Theologyweb's co-owners... And not Dee Dee, the nice one.

"$cirisme" leapt into the fray:
"Thread closed. Pro-life activism is not the place for debating whether or not abortion is murder, ptet."
WTF?

I didn't start the thread. It was called "When is abortion murder?". But I got flamed for discussing the subject of the thread. Gotta love that Evangelical morality, logic and reasoning, huh?

But "$cirisme" (if that is his real name) was not done. Obviously nervous that Twebbers might become infected with my godlessness, he emailed me:
I have removed the link to your blog from your signature and your profile. You may not add them back or link to your blog from anywhere on this site.
To reinforce the smiting, "$cirisme" seems to have crippled my access to Theologyweb. If I log in, I lag out. If I log out, the site works fine. That is, of course, the Christian way to deal with dissent. It is, after all, exactly what Jesus would have done.

So there we have it. PTET all-but-expelled from Theologyweb... And all in the name of keeping Jebus happy...

Sarah Palin: Dinosaur Rapture

Over at Rapture Ready, everybody's favorite forum for insane fundamentalist "does-my-hair-look-good-for-jesus" drooling, the rubes are getting restless about Sarah Palin.

Ketsialove gushes over this eye-popping stuff from Salon like it's a good thing (my emphasis):

"[He] says that Palin also helped push the evangelical drive to take over the Mat-Su Borough school board. “She wanted to get people who believed in creationism on the board,” said Munger, a music composer and teacher. “I bumped into her once after my band played at a graduation ceremony at the Assembly of God. I said, ‘Sarah, how can you believe in creationism — your father’s a science teacher.’ And she said, ‘We don’t have to agree on everything.’

I pushed her on the earth’s creation, whether it was really less than 7,000 years old and whether dinosaurs and humans walked the earth at the same time. And she said yes, she’d seen images somewhere of dinosaur fossils with human footprints in them.

Munger also asked Palin if she truly believed in the End of Days, the doomsday scenario when the Messiah will return. “She looked in my eyes and said, ‘Yes, I think I will see Jesus come back to earth in my lifetime.’
This leads to an outpouring of stupidity so rich and fruity that, well, what can I say? Don't drink and read these comments at the same time. You may splarff if you do:
"Not only afraid but hate her. Just as a lot of liberals hate GWB because of his Christian beliefs. There has been a few celebrities have come out and said they hate Sarah Palin. Pamela Anderson, Cindy Lohan come to mind. Why? What other reason could it be other than because she is pro-life and loves Jesus." - stevenw56

"What do you think the reaction would be if Sarah Palin and Joe Biden were debating on national primetime tv, and she suddenly disappeared with the rapture." - Thelion777

"like anything (her hairstyle, sex, the fact she has not had an abortion, choice of eye glasses), this will be used against her..." - icebear

"Sarah may not get to be VP after all even though I would have voted for her if I was Here." - I'mready

"You just have to love her. She doesn't care what anyone thinks, and tells it like it is. " - nanC

"Science and the Bible are in perfect alignment... What the arrogant fools who believe in evolution don't understand is that it simply is wrong because there's no evidence for it... Evolution is wrong not because of Religion or Christianity or the Bible. Evolution is wrong because there's simply no evidence that we evolved from lower species... Lack of evidence doesn't make a wacko theory a fact." - Norrin Radd
But whackoness aside, does Sarah palin actually believe in the rapture? I still think not. I still think, like the neocon movement generally, politicians see religion as a handy lever for easy electability and simple social control. But still, it's hard not to judge her for the company she keeps... And not everyone is as cynical as me about actual belief.

Sam Harris, writing in Newsweek put it thusly:
"Palin's spiritual colleagues describe themselves as part of "the final generation," engaged in "spiritual warfare" to purge the earth of "demonic strongholds." Palin has spent her entire adult life immersed in this apocalyptic hysteria. Ask yourself: Is it a good idea to place the most powerful military on earth at her disposal? Do we actually want our leaders thinking about the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy when it comes time to say to the Iranians, or to the North Koreans, or to the Pakistanis, or to the Russians or to the Chinese: "All options remain on the table"?"
Meanwhile, for the rational religious, Andrew Sullivan weighs in:
"[The End Times]. Yes, she believes in them. Of course she believes in them. Her former pastor believes that Alaska will be the refuge for the faithful in the lower 48 states when the Rapture comes. She is a Biblical literalist who denies evolution - who has to deny evolution - to remain in her church. She believes - because she has to believe - that the earth was created 6,000 years ago."
Does Sarah Palin believe this? Does she believe that rape victims should be denied abortions? Does she believe Iraq was behind 9-11? I guess we'll find out soon enough. Roll on the debates...

Guest Post: Denyse O'Leary

Hello and welcome to the latest addition to my family of blogs. Yes, you've read that right. I'm delighted to have been asked to post at PTET, my one-hundreth blog, in celebration of his one hundredth post to "After The Bar Closes". I've never been there myself. Apparently it's materialist, Darwin-worshipping, God-hating heaven.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm a Toronto-based journalist; Roman Catholic Christian. I'm an avid blogger, an award winning author, and three time winner of a "world's best grandmother" mug. Look out for my books of ghost stories, "The Spiritual Train" and "The Spiritual Lane". I got help with the big words from a real scientist I met at a dinner party! Coming soon, there's a sequel set in the world of sewage management, "The Spiritual Drain", and a children's book set at the docks of old Newfoundland, "The Spiritual Crane".

Darwinists are mean and spiteful because in their world-view, life is meaningless. I mean if all we are is material atoms, then what possible use could here be for love, hate, science or helping people? We'd all just be animals rutting, rutting, filthy rutting to pass on our genes.

Darwinists persecute me because of my beliefs. Sometimes I wish I was Jewish, because they really get persecuted, but I get persecuted so much for being Roman Catholic I don't think I'll change.

Life is so obviously, like, designed. I mean, just look at it. Do I look like a monkey? Do I look like a rutting animal? OK, so DaveScot is like the missing link (joking!), but that nice Dr. Dr. Dr. Dembski says there's some incredible secret they have which means it's important Mr Stroppy Cheesy-Poofs won't be going anywhere for a long time.

"Intelligent Design" is so obviously not religious. Just look at it? Does it look religious? Darwinism - now there's a religion. That's why Christians (and my Jewish friends!) don't believe in it. Some people call themselves Christian evolutionists, but they're so far removed from real spiritual beings that I can pretend they don't exist. And anyway, they say that God is bigger than science. That's absurd. It's obvious to anyone with half a brain. That nice Dr. Dembski has three doctorations so he's very very, very clever. He agrees with me that it's completely obvious that everything is front-loaded into our DNA... So all of us carry the entire future of the Universe already written in our genes!

Materialists never dream. What's the point if all we are is rutting beasts? They're not interested in the future, where maybe one day President Palin will be arm and arm with a Toronto-based grandmother journalist, thrust by popular acclaim to be Prime Minister of Canada? With a pony! Now that's a future we can all believe in.

Now, over at "The Mindless Hash", bake the best communion-cookies you've ever tasted.

Don't miss me at "Salvage Blag", where I tell all those "scientists" with their fancy-pants "degrees" just where they are going wrong.

Buy my book.

Sarah Palin *is* Rapture Ready

In previous posts, I've opined that Sarah Palin wasn't crazy... That her choice of church and her rapist-friendly stance on abortion were likely just political posturing. Only pathetic low-lifes with boring jobs actually believe in the rapture, I said.

It looks like I was wrong.

Pharyngula has a must-read report on a litany of Alaskan insiders lining up to dish the dirt on God's own VP candidate, including some eye-popping stuff from Salon:

"...Palin [was asked] if she truly believed in the End of Days, the doomsday scenario when the Messiah will return. "She looked in my eyes and said, 'Yes, I think I will see Jesus come back to earth in my lifetime.'"
Jesus frikkin' Christ on a bike.

There's lots more there about Palin pushing creationism, pissing off her constituents, and generally being an asshole. But don't take my word for it. Read it yourself.

Meanwhile, En Tequila point out that the lies pouring from John McCain's campaign team have gotten so blatant that even Fox News are outraged.

Wow. It really must be the End of Days.

Christians watch out! Cthulhu is coming and will eat you. Rexella Van Impe has more...

And finally... I've had quite a few hits from people looking for "what Rexella thinks of Sarah Palin". Well, I've been wondering about that myself... But as Rexella (and Jack's!) ministry is a non-profit religious outfit, and therefore forbidden from discussing politics. If anything changes and Rexella does express an opinion, you can be sure I'll report it here. For now, though, I think we can safely assume that Rexella hearts Sarah Palin.... Just as I heart Rexella :)

Denyse on Worthwhile Discussion

Denyse O'Leary writes in her new piece at Salvo Mag:

"The new atheists have inherited that unmistakable self-righteous post-Sixties vehemence which doubtless feels good to the venter and those who share the venter's views, but makes no new point and advances no worthwhile discussion."
I thought it might be useful to list some of Denyse' own "worthwhile" additions to discussions on...

1. Science
"I have no objection to origin of life research, but then I have no objection to the search for the Lost Atlantis either."
2. Economics
"I've sometimes said that Darwinism is the Enron of biology, but I hadn't realized that the Enron guys themselves were actually Darwin freaks. A friend tells me, re the Enron documentary, The Smartest Guys in the Room, Of interest to me was the unapologetically explicit philosophy of Darwinism which was prevalent at Enron from top management to commodity traders."
3. Ethics
"I wonder how many... would prefer to be... mere evolved amoeba, as long as they knew that they would not be held accountable for their own behaviour?"
4. Philosophy
"...producing... infants... is not an intellectual enterprise. So whatever is going on with the intellect, and therefore about philosophy of science, is not Darwinian, apparently."
5. Religion:
"If I weren’t so happy being a Catholic, I would be tempted to be a Jew. I wouldn’t be tempted to be an atheist/agnostic, because it doesn’t sound like anyone cares much."
Can anyone tell me what's wrong with this picture? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?
